St Benedict
In the fifth century, St Benedict was sent to Rome (whilst in his youth) to complete his education with a nurse/housekeeper. He studied rhetoric, (the art of persuasive speaking). Benedict founded a monastery in Monte Cassino that became the roots of the Church’s monastic system.
St Scholastica
The sister of St Benedict, consecrated her life to god (whilst in her youth), when her brother went to Monte Cassino, she founded her own monastery of nuns, about five miles from St Benedicts monastery. Scholastica would meet her brother annually and would often pray together in the evenings.
